Hello!
Since the forum is still empty, someone must start it.
Many of our foreign students, especially those from Europe, try to get everything done before coming to Thailand. This includes renting a room, what leads them to online booking of apartments. They pay horrible prices for poor quality, and often choose a location close to Khaosan Road, which then makes them travelling by bus for two and a half hours twice a day.
Don't book anything on the Internet. Come to Bangkok, take an affordable hotel room for a night, go to your university next day, and ask your fellow students where you should take a room. This is the safest (and probably only) way to avoid getting cheated as well.
'If you're in Rome, do it as the Romans do.'
Have a good time in Thailand,
Uli

Yea i totally agree you should go apartment hunting with a Thai friend when you get to your university that way you can get good cheap accommodation. And you would want to live near your UNI as traffic in the morning in Bangkok can get pretty miserable.

mhh i don't agree 100 percent
i checked a lot of apartments in the internet before i came to bangkok and it was very usefull! you have a complete picture of the different price categories and you can check on google maps where exactly the apartments are located.
so i filtered a lot of good apartments between 3000-15.000 baht and then checked them as i arrived.
for me it was very usefull! but my advice is of course NOT to book/rent a apartment before you see it with your own eyes.
i saw a lot of apartments with wet walls, very bad a/c or just a very loud and noisy neighbourhood. you also have to check the different ways to the university. if you don't live near your university it is sometimes possible to go by skytrain, mrt, bus or even boat !

Agree completely with vaitor. Did the same thing myself when I arrived in Bkk 2 months ago, and just traveled around in taxi checking a lot of apartments, before settling with the nicest (and most expensive :-))

Hi ,
well, Since i'm about to move to Thailand in a few months,
I have started to look for apartments to rent too, i wanted
to do this in advanced. I found a website that to mee sounds
ok, it has lots of pictures, from outside the budilding, to the
inside, and even a map of where it's located, it lists what
universities are nearby as well as other points of interests
such as bus stations, stores etc.
I agree not to book anthing before you see it and make sure
you like the neighborhood. But i look for aparments online to
give me an idea of the price range of the aparments are,
and what features are included whitin a certain price.
I think i found the perfpect place for me, it looks clean, nice
and quiet, one this is that it's close to Ram U, i dont know how
far it is from BKK U. Aparments closer to BKK U are more
expensive.
I want an area thats quiet, not near any nightlife center,
not too loud where the music is on 24/7 at high volume
I hear that Bkk can get quiet noisy

Hi, this is useful information. Unfortunately I will not be able to go apartment hunting with a Thai student. I will be there for my internship and I do not know anyone. I have searched for rooms but decided not to book it already. Does any of you have more tips for me, or may be you know someone living in Bangkok who can help me out over there? My internship address is in the Huay Kwang District. Well, I hope you can help me out!

Don't worry. Get yourself a cheap hotel or guest house for the first one or two nights. Your colleagues will go with you to rent a room on the first day you meet them. They know all the places around and will show you a good and affordable one.
