A U.S. student at my university applied for a 90-day tourist visa in the States.
When entering Thailand, he received a stamp in his passport valid for 60 days.
He didn't recognize that he had not a 90-day period at hand.
When our Admissions Department found it out, less than 21 days were left. He extended his visa to the full 90 days - but he had no more chance to change the tourist visa into a student visa. The 21-day period was undercut already.
He now has to leave the country and start the whole process again.
Lots of trouble and stress, and several missed classes.
Don't be stupid or lazy. Get your student visa back home, and you won't face any trouble when in Thailand. Immigration matters are the most serious one for a foreigner in Thailand, as they are in the U.S. or Europe for any foreigner as well.
