Special: Universities and colleges in Thailand |
In Thai higher academic education, you find public and private institutions. Both need accreditation by the Royal Ministry of Education to award academic degrees. In both areas, you find universities and colleges. These term are not used consistently as a description for the level of education.
There are universities, often private ones, that only offer undergraduate programs. Then, there are colleges within universities, for instance offering undergraduate and continuing education. Other 4-year colleges are private institutions and offer undergraduate studies. Besides that, there are 2-year colleges as well offering vocational education. Such colleges are not listed below.
As one might expect in Thailand, all public and private universities and colleges offer programs conducted in Thai language. Only some of them offer higher education conducted in other languages in English programs and Chinese programs. Programs in other languages, such as German, are not offered until present day. Since very few programs are conducted in Chinese, the terms
'international program' and 'English program' are used synonymously. Similarly, an 'international university' or 'international college' are not hints to international cross-border institutions. These terms just point to Thai institutions offering at least one program conducted in a language other than Thai. Besides Chinese (Mandarin) and English, there are no other languages in which lecturers are conducted over the whole program.
Over the past few years, it apparently became fashionable to offer an international program. Besides gaining 'face' for the perceived professionalism of an international program, the widely accepted higher tuition fee might be the real reason. In the menu bar on the left, you find those universities and 4-year colleges offering academic degree studies in either English or Chinese (Mandarin) language. From 387 international programs in 2002, the number shot up to 844 in 2006. In four years, the number more than doubled.
International education in Thailand is an important factor for the economy. Not taking into account international schools, universities with these international programs generated THB 58.2 billion in revenue from them in 2007, up from THB 52.6 billion and THB 40.8 billion in 2006 and 2005 respectively, according to the Thai Commission on Higher Education's Bureau of International Cooperation Strategy.
The international programs in Thailand cover almost all fields of studies. That doesn't make it easier for you to find the best program, however, since many programs come along with fashionable names but conventional content. As it is for studies in any country other than your own, you need to look behind the curtains before making your decision.
