study in thailand - the international programs community at Thai universities

About Us

We started this Web site with developing the homepage and the first forums on the Web Board on April 12, 2008.

We want to promote studying in Thailand worldwide, and we want to promote studying an international program as an alternative for Thai students.

'All that glitters is not gold', people say. International higher education in Thailand is available all the range from international top level down to poorest quality. As good and as honest as we can, we want to offer advice to the decision-making process when it comes to studying an international program at a university in Thailand. Everybody is very welcome to criticize our articles and to suggest additional subjects or further aspects. The final decision on what is published, however, remains at a team of editors who have years of experience in international programs.

Who we are

'We', that is a quite large group of people. All of them are either students, alumni, or lecturers in an international program at a Thai university, supported by several lecturers at U.S. and European universities who conduct courses in Thailand as a visiting professor on a regular basis.

Studyinthailand.org also serves as a 'dummy company' in several courses to introduce target group-oriented Web design, online journalism, non-profit marketing, multimedia technologies, project management and corporate design. Therefore, the group of people working on this site permanently changes.

Professor Ulrich WernerAny group with good intentions should not remain anonymous. Initiator and public face of this project is Ulrich Werner,
since 2002 adjunct professor at the Institute of International Studies (IIS-RU), Ramkhamhaeng University, and since
2005 visiting professor at Burapha University International College (BUUIC) in Bang Saen, Chonburi province. He conducts
graduate and undergraduate subjects in Business Administration, Mass Communication, and Education courses. His
major research interest is higher education management and marketing.

Why do we run this web site?

Not too long ago, any foreign student or lecturer in Thailand was far away and thinking about studying or working elsewhere. We, the team running this project, landed in Thailand. Some had a very soft landing since they were properly prepared for the experiences to make here, and some landed a bit harder.

Until now, there was little chance to make a conscious decision where and what to study. Thai university Web sites address mainly Thai students, and if one managed to get an email contact to a current student in Thailand, this student could only report about the own experiences, rather than giving a good and reliable overview of the options available.

That is what we want to change. As different Thai students have different motivations to choose a particular program, foreign students have different expectations and motives to study abroad in general, an Thailand in particular.

To make a good decision in order to get the most out of it, you at least need to know the options. We will explain them and hope, this way, to enable you for making the one decision that is best for you and your future.

Why do we run a Web Board as well?

Students from numerous countries and cultures study in Thailand every year. There is little chance, if any, to learn about the experiences from other students of a different or even of one's own culture. We think, it needs a place to meet.

Forum for international students in ThailandUnfortunately, most Web sites of Thai universities (international programs at these universities are not an exception) are
not made to inform future students. They are made by IT or multimedia students or staff targeting to impress the own
superiors. If you visit some of these Web site, you may recognize how many of them begin with a photograph of the
president, the vision, the mission, and the goals of the university. That is not what we call 'customer centred'.

Communication in Thai society is very much rule-based. The most important rule is always to speak nicely. Thais
well understand to read between the lines, but foreigners don't.

We hope that intense discussion between students and lecturers of different programs will make strengths, weaknesses, and differences between the many available programs more transparent than they are today.

Since there are no measurable criteria commonly agreed, we cannot say that one program is better or worse than the other. It depends very much on you, which program is best for you. This Web Board offers you to get in touch with students and lecturers of those programs that remain on your short list when choosing a program.

We are not:

  • ...in any agent business that might get money from anybody if you study in Thailand or at a certain institution.
  • ...affiliated with any university, college, company, or other institution, neither in Thailand nor elsewhere.
  • ...affiliated with the Royal Thai Ministry of Education, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, or any other public institution.

We just run a private Web site trying to serve information needs independently.

What about you?
